Today we love Halloween because it gives us an excuse to get dressed in a fun costume and go in search of candy. But Halloween began with a much darker and more magical purpose thousands of years ago.

The ancient Celtics recognized November as the beginning of winter and called the day Samhain, or season of death. So, the night before Samhain began, the Celts would paint faces on gourds and disguise themselves in costumes to keep the spirits of the dead away. It's amazing to think that thousands of years later we're still dressing up in costumes, but this time to run through the streets and load up on tricks - and treats!
